Crafting Smiles: Navigating Pediatric Hospitalization with Positivity and Passion

Pediatric hospitalization can involve a roller coaster of emotions for the sick child, their family, their friends, and even their doctors and nurses. They might be feeling shock, uncomfort, sadness, a combination of all three, or even more. Unfortunately, millions worldwide endure this experience annually. Although it may seem intimidating initially, pediatric hospitalization actually can (and should) be made the most of. However, many people might not know how exactly to do so. Let’s break it down.

The patient’s mental welfare plays a significant role in their loved one’s mental welfare. So, it’s crucial that each and every pediatric patient strives to maintain a positive state of mind throughout their entire stay at the hospital. While this is definitely easier said than done, here are a few simple exercises a patient can do to help themselves achieve such state of mind:

1. Discussing their feelings with someone they trust

Whether our feelings about our circumstances are positive or negative, it’s best to let them out. Bottling up emotions is known to increase the production of cortisol, a stress hormone in our bodies. Furthermore, it can lead to social withdrawal and anxiety. On the other hand, talking about our feelings can encourage emotional awareness in an individual and help them gain any support they need.

2. Thinking optimistically

Simply put, positive thoughts contribute to a positive mindset. Throughout every difficult and emotional circumstance (especially hospitalization), a positive mindset is a necessity. It trains our brains to cope effectively and efficiently with stress, provides us with hope, and can even increase our lifespans.

3. Staying in touch with their passions

Our hobbies and passions are wonderful indicators of our individuality and creativity, and they help make each and every one of us special in our own ways. Whether it is horseback riding or painting, our pastimes bring us joy, encouragement, and comfort. Participating in them is truly a meaningful experience, especially in times of mental disturbance.

Unfortunately, #3 is probably the most challenging task to fulfill, as hospitalization may limit the number and variety of activities available to patients. That’s why we created Crafting Smiles, a 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to uplifting hospitalized children by nurturing their passions. Virtual volunteers host 1:1 30-minute sessions with patients in which the two can engage in a multitude of activities, such as digital art, drawing, music, origami, pottery, and/or storytime. The best part about it? Anyone can join! Some of our patients' wonderful creations are pictured below:

Crafting Smiles welcomes every individual eager to make a positive difference in the lives of the world’s pediatric patients, to serve their community, and to help foster the creativity of young minds. Our vision is clear: we want to build a world in which every single pediatric patient shares a connection and enjoys a smile, and we want you to help.
